Questions & Answers

  • What is the difference between the S & S 585G and 510 G cam gears sets?

    By: Phil

The only real difference between the 585G and the 510G kits are the valve timing specifications which are noted in the descriptions for both items. Component-wise, all the same parts are included in each kit: cams, bearings, gears, gaskets along with the various bolts and hardware required to assemble everything.

Those differences in timing apply to the type of engine set up you have. The 510G cam kit is best for 88 or 95 cubic inch motors with stock cylinder heads running with a compression ratio of 9.7:1. With proper fueling, you can expect the largest increase in engine power output between 3,000 and 5,000 RPM. If you haven't done much in the way of tuning the top end of your motor, this would be the better kit for you.

The 585G cam kit, on the other hand, is better suited for 88 or 95 cubic inch motors running compression ratios between 10:1 and 10.5:1. It also fits 100 or 107 cubic inch motors at 9.7:1 - 10.:1 compression ratios. The biggest bump in power output will be noticed between 3,500-6,000 RPM. Obviously, the heads wouldn't be stock for the 585G kit.

In both cases, these gear-drive cam kits from S&S increase valve timing accuracy and, with proper fuel tuning - you can expect significant power gains and improved throttle response.
