You'll also want to add fork oil to your order, for that, we like Maxima fork oil, and your bike calls for 20W viscosity. To your concern about ride - the forks will feel firm, but smoother than stock. That may sound contradictory, but it's the quality of the valving that makes the ride feel smoother without feeling harsh at all. The cartridge valving will make a big difference in the way your bike feels up front, and matched with the Progressive 412 shocks you have on the rear, you'll find your bike to be a really well sprung machine!

Unfortunately no, seals are not included with any of the fork cartridge kits from any of our suppliers. You are to re-use the stock components if they're in good shape. But as you've probably surmised, since you'd already have the forks torn apart to install these, you might as well add a set of fork seals, or better yet, a fork rebuild kit to your order along with some fork oil so you have everything you need to completely service the front end of your bike in one go!

You'll need to get some fork oil, I personally like Maxima. OEM fork weight on your bike is 10W. And, since you're already there, you might as well service the fork seals and bushings on your bike, though that may not be required if you've had the forks looked after depending on how far into the recommended 50,000 mile service interval you're at. Save for that, nope - these kits will totally transform the front end of your bike without the need to buy any extra parts.

Like many things - it really depends. If you're after something that's easier to install, this is the way to go. If you're looking for more refinement in terms of adjustability, the Race Tech components are the better option since you can adjust the valving to suit your needs. Valving is what really gives your front end the feel you like (or don't like). I can tell you that, however, both of these options are way (as in WAY!) better than stock in terms of feel and performance.

Nope, no special tools are required - it sounds like you've got the major elements: simple hand tools and a means of supporting the bike's front end while you swap out the cartridges. An evening or two in the garage, a couple of cold drinks and maybe a swear word or two and you'll be all set. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing you how to get the work done as well. Basically, if you're comfortable changing the clutch plates, oil and swapping tires, then installing this will be well within your capabilities.

It's a little more complicated than changing out a complete clutch kit, but it's certainly nothing you can't do in your own garage with simple hand tools. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about changing for cartridges, just check those out since it's pretty much the same for most HDs of that model year. A service manual from Clymer will also tell you EVERYTHING you need to know along with showing good photos, torque specs &etc. If you're comfortable with wheel changes, getting in the primary, doing oil changes or taking the tank off your bike, this won't be that difficult.

In the case of the 1997 FLHT's fork cartridge kit, you'll need 5 oz. of 10W fork oil for each fork. As for seals, none of those are included in the kit. You can re-use the OEM components if they're in good condition. That said, considering the age of the bike, and since you're already halfway there, you might as well put some new seals and/or bushings on while you're at it. That way, there will be no question as to the competency of your new fork internals. And yes, you WILL notice a difference in front end feel upon installation of this cartridge kit. Yes, at the very least, you will have to remove the front wheel from your machine in order to install this Progressive fork cartridge kit. The reason being is that you'll have to loosen the bolt on the bottom of each fork that secures each OEM Harley fork cartridge in place. Plus, with all of the fork oil that will come out once each bolt is pulled, you're looking at a small mess, too. Unless you have something that can reach all the way to the bottom of the forks to suck out that oil, it's best to pull the forks off of the bike and drain them by dumping out all of that fork oil into a pan.
