do I need to program it or does it come with a better than stock program already installed

You would need to set the different ignition curves on the module when you install it on your machine.

Do you have to have special equipment to program this ?

Can you just plug this in and run or do you have to program it first ?

No special equipment required! The unit has switch-selectable curves and rev limit settings on the device itself. It's only when you want to dig into completely programmable curves that you'll need to a PC and a Dynatek DIPK-4 programming kit, which is sold separately. For most tuning applications, the switch-set curves will be more than sufficient. It's only when you're getting into big builds that you may want to utilize the PC-programmed curves.
