Freshened up my upper end on my stroked 87 bagger and installed a set of these little beauties. Use to have a hard time starting at first but now it's a snap. I'm running Edelbrock performer RPM heads and these fit real good.

Are there a magical way to install the releases without removing the heads?

Unless you already have compression release ports installed, you would need to remove the heads and have them machined to accept compression releases.
