It varies, depending on how your machine is running, how you ride the bike &etc. To start with, have a look after five tanks of fuel and that should give you a pretty good idea of how often this would need to be emptied for your particular setup. It's really not that often in most cases, after all, you'd be running out of oil pretty quickly if this thing was being filled up after every ride! 2,000+ mile intervals are not unheard of.

Yes, you can easily unscrew the catch can, usually by hand, and clean it out. You'll find a foam filter element inside. Just squeeze that out and wash it with soapy water and you're all set.
